In the past I thought great, this sounds like a great way to earn some extra money online with very little input. It is still the case, but I'm much more wary of sources that can be used when applying to respond to these online surveys.
Almost 90% of all survey sites that can be found online application sign up fee, or money up front for the membership. That's when you know you've found a scam site, or dodgy web site, never part with any money to apply for paid survey sites. All web pages that I found (through a very reputable sources) that I used for the past 5 years were completely free to join and use, never seeking any sign up fee or membership fee.

...When looking for money for the research sites will be applied to, make sure they are free to join and use. Always stay clear of the survey sites that neglected to mention that you are free to use or not, will inevitably ask for some form of payment. I never reveal personal / confidential information when applying for and researching web sites and answering paid surveys. Most of the site survey would never request sensitive information, and if they are likely to be an option for you if you supply that information or not.
